    Mapping to Exam Content Outline

This chapter connects directly to Domain V: Portfolio Risk Management, which accounts for approximately 20% of the PfMP exam. It covers the full risk management cycle at the portfolio level: establishing risk appetite and tolerance boundaries aligned to strategy, identifying and assessing both threats and opportunities across components, applying quantitative and qualitative sensitivity analysis, developing response strategies and governing reserves, and continuously monitoring and rebalancing the portfolio's overall risk profile. Exam scenarios in this area often test whether you understand portfolio risk as an aggregate, strategic exposure rather than a rollup of individual project risks.

    • Domain V: Portfolio Risk Management (20% of exam): This chapter covers determining risk appetite and tolerance boundaries in alignment with organizational strategy, identifying and assessing portfolio-level risks including both threats and opportunities, performing quantitative and qualitative sensitivity analysis, developing portfolio risk response strategies and governing reserves, and continuously monitoring and rebalancing the portfolio's risk profile.
    • Domain I: Strategic Alignment (supporting): This chapter reinforces aligning the portfolio's overall risk profile with the organization's actual capacity to absorb risk.
    • Domain II: Governance (supporting): This chapter reinforces formalizing governance authority for releasing reserves and defining threshold tripwires that trigger escalation.
    • Related Knowledge and Skills: Risk appetite and tolerance definition, threat and opportunity identification, quantitative and qualitative sensitivity analysis, reserve governance, and continuous risk rebalancing.

On the PfMP exam, questions in this area often present a scenario where individual components each carry acceptable risk on their own, but the aggregate portfolio risk exposure exceeds what the organization can tolerate. Favor the answer that addresses risk at the portfolio level, such as rebalancing the mix of components or adjusting reserves, rather than one that treats each component's risk in isolation. When a scenario involves releasing contingency reserves or crossing a risk threshold, the correct response almost always routes through the governance authority defined for that purpose rather than a unilateral decision by the portfolio manager.
