    Mapping to Exam Content Outline

This chapter connects directly to Domain IV: Portfolio Stakeholder Engagement, which accounts for approximately 18% of the PfMP exam. It covers the full stakeholder engagement cycle at the portfolio level: identifying and classifying stakeholders to build the portfolio stakeholder register, creating a communications management plan that defines channels, cadence, and distribution protocols, actively engaging stakeholders to build consensus and align competing strategic priorities, and monitoring engagement metrics and sentiment to adapt the communication approach over time. Exam scenarios in this area often test whether you understand stakeholder engagement as a continuous, portfolio-wide discipline rather than a series of one-off communications tied to individual components.

    • Domain IV: Portfolio Stakeholder Engagement (18% of exam): This chapter covers identifying and analyzing stakeholders through mapping and classification techniques, developing and maintaining the portfolio communications management plan, engaging stakeholders to build consensus and manage competing priorities, and monitoring stakeholder sentiment and engagement metrics to adapt strategy dynamically.
    • Domain I: Strategic Alignment (supporting): This chapter reinforces translating enterprise strategic vision into coherent, stakeholder-appropriate messaging.
    • Domain II: Governance (supporting): This chapter reinforces maintaining stakeholder alignment across stage gates, portfolio steering reviews, and capital reallocation events.
    • Related Knowledge and Skills: Stakeholder mapping and classification, stakeholder register maintenance, communications planning, consensus building, expectation management, and sentiment monitoring.

On the PfMP exam, questions in this area often present a scenario where stakeholders have competing priorities or where a communication approach that worked earlier in the portfolio has stopped landing. Favor the answer that reclassifies or re-engages the stakeholder based on current data, such as updated sentiment or influence, rather than one that repeats a prior approach out of habit or escalates prematurely. When a scenario involves a stage gate, steering review, or capital reallocation event, the correct response treats stakeholder alignment as a required input to that governance moment, not an afterthought communicated only once the decision has already been made.
