    Welcome to the Practicum: Your Journey into the Real World of Outsourcing

    Dear Reader,

    Welcome to Managing Outsourcing – A Practicum. If you’re expecting a traditional textbook filled with long lectures and abstract theory, let me gently reset that expectation: this is something entirely different.

    This is a practicum. That means you're not here to simply read—you’re here to do.

    In today’s interconnected world, outsourcing is more than a cost-saving strategy. It’s a leadership function. A strategic capability. A make-or-break decision that can determine whether a project soars or sinks. That’s why this course, and this book, are built to give you experience—not just information.

    You’ll take on the role of someone leading outsourcing decisions inside an organization. At times you’ll act as the project manager, procurement lead, technical sponsor, or relationship manager. You’ll be asked to assess when and what to outsource, write RFPs, evaluate vendors, negotiate contracts, and manage relationships when things go wrong (and they will). You will not be watching outsourcing happen from the sidelines—you’ll be in the middle of it.

    To help you succeed in this role, this book is built on the principles of Problem-Based Learning (PBL).

    Why Problem-Based Learning?

    Problem-Based Learning flips the script on education. Instead of starting with a lecture and ending with a quiz, we begin with a problem—one you’re expected to solve. You’ll learn through decision-making, not note-taking. Through action, not abstraction. Each milestone starts with a real-world scenario, and from there, you’ll be given tools, resources, and guidance to analyze, plan, respond, and reflect.

    You’ll hit roadblocks. You’ll encounter ambiguity. You’ll have to think on your feet. That’s by design. Because in real outsourcing work, there is rarely one right answer. What matters is how you think—how you communicate, justify, and improve your decisions.

    This method will stretch you, but it will also prepare you. Graduates of this course have stepped into tech companies, nonprofits, healthcare systems, and startups with the confidence to lead cross-functional teams, write professional-grade RFPs, and manage vendors with clarity and professionalism. You can too.
