Clarity, Equity, and Learning Through Practice
Assessment in this course is designed not to reward perfection, but to recognize professional growth, structured thinking, and consistent engagement with real-world problem solving. This practicum is not about testing what you can memorize—it is about supporting the development of your ability to manage complexity, communicate risk clearly, and apply tools that help teams and organizations make informed decisions.
All grading structures used in this course are built to be:
- Transparent – Students always know what is being assessed and why
- Structured – Deliverables follow a consistent format with clear rubrics
- Equitable – Multiple modes of learning are respected, including writing, modeling, collaboration, and self-reflection
- Formative – Feedback is used not just to score past work, but to improve future performance
What You Will Be Graded On
Your grade in this practicum is based on the following four categories:
1. Milestone Deliverables (xx%)
Each of the 12 milestone modules includes a deliverable—such as a risk tracker, strategy memo, decision tree diagram, or reflection worksheet. These are graded using a five-point rubric for:
- Conceptual accuracy
- Clarity and structure of communication
- Application of risk tools
- Completeness and professionalism
- Collaboration (if in teams) or thoughtful execution (if working solo)
Example: For Milestone 3, your team might submit a summary report based on the Expert Consensus Method, detailing key assumptions, risk ratings, and your method of analysis.
2. Reflections and Lessons Learned (xx%)
After each milestone, you will respond to a set of reflection questions. These may be submitted individually (in team settings) or integrated into your overall deliverable (for independent learners). These reflections are assessed on:
- Depth of insight
- Honesty of evaluation
- Evidence of metacognition (thinking about your thinking)
- Relevance to the tools and decision-making process used
Example: After Milestone 6, you might reflect on whether SWOT helped clarify internal versus external risk, and how it shaped your risk response priorities
3. Final Integration (xx%)
At the end of the course, you will complete a final integration activity that brings together your learning. This may be:
- A portfolio review of selected milestone artifacts
- A capstone summary memo analyzing your personal risk leadership growth
- A group debrief (for teams) focused on shared lessons and recommendations
This component is graded on:
- Synthesis of key concepts across milestones
- Clarity and thoughtfulness of presentation
- Professional tone and delivery
4. Professional Practice (xx%)
- On-time and complete submissions
- Quality of teamwork or solo planning
- Engagement with feedback (e.g., incorporating instructor suggestions)
- Upholding academic integrity and collaboration guidelines
- This portion reflects your work habits, communication style, and contribution to a respectful, productive learning environment. It includes:
- Example: If you're working in a team, this category reflects your follow-through on role-based responsibilities and your constructive support of others.
Sample Milestone Rubric
Each milestone includes its own custom rubric, but all follow a shared pattern like the one below:
|
Category |
Description |
Points |
|
Risk Tool Application |
Correct and complete use of the assigned tool or framework |
2 pts |
|
Logical Structure & Clarity |
Well-organized analysis and communication; assumptions clearly stated |
2 pts |
|
Creativity & Insight |
Thoughtful adaptation of the tool to the SMDC context |
1 pt |
|
Collaboration or Execution |
Effective teamwork (if applicable) or personal initiative |
1 pt |
|
Formatting & Submission |
File naming, structure, and final assembly as instructed |
1 pt |
|
Total |
7 pts |
Note: Some milestones may include bonus points for going beyond expectations or proposing alternative frameworks with clear justification.
Resubmissions and Revisions
This course encourages learning through iteration. If you submit a milestone that shows effort but misses key elements, you may be invited to revise and resubmit it after receiving targeted feedback. The goal is to improve your skills and deepen your understanding—not to punish missteps.
Deadlines and resubmission windows are typically determined by your instructor or course facilitator, but we recommend turning in initial drafts early when possible to leave space for review and improvement.

Assessment Philosophy
Assessment in this course is not just about points. It is about learning how to deliver value, communicate insight, and reflect on your own growth. If you participate fully, think critically, and apply yourself with intention—you will succeed, even if your initial answers aren’t perfect.
The work you do here is meant to be used again—in portfolios, interviews, internships, or real team projects. Take pride in it, revise it, and make it yours.
