    Introduction

Welcome to this practical guide designed to support educators and aspiring educators in enhancing their teaching with technology. Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, this text offers valuable insights, tools, and strategies to help you engage learners and effectively use technology in today’s classrooms.

    Audience

This textbook is designed for educators, aspiring educators, and others looking to enhance their teaching with technology. It targets introductory to intermediate skill levels, suitable for both new and experienced teachers. The text emphasizes the integration of digital tools & pedagogical strategies designed to engage learners. The text includes trends, best practices, and ethical considerations offering a comprehensive guide for effective technology use in modern education.

    Chapter Outline

This textbook is organized into eight chapters, each focusing on a specific competency supporting the successful integration and use of educational technology in teaching and learning:

    • Chapter 1: Integrating Educational Technology (Theory and Practice): This chapter explores computer technology and digital media's importance and offers strategies to adapt to the digital generation's unique characteristics. By applying pedagogical practices, you'll create engaging tech-enhanced learning experiences, shaping the future of education in the digital age.
    • Chapter 2: Communication Tools in Education: This chapter explores educational communication tools, including apps, software, and platforms, revolutionize learning by facilitating collaboration, information sharing, and engagement in educational institutions. These digital tools not only save time for teachers on tasks like scheduling but also provide students with innovative ways to work together remotely, transforming classes into interactive communities and offering flexible learning opportunities.
    • Chapter 3: Software and Apps for Education: In this chapter, educators and learners will learn how to leverage rapidly advancing software and apps in their teaching and learning practices. The focus is on finding digital tools that align with curriculum needs and understanding their pedagogical value. The chapter also delves into evaluating the effectiveness of these tools and explores graphic authoring and editing software to enhance lessons with visuals, ultimately empowering educators to make informed choices.
    • Chapter 4: Hardware and Devices in Education: This chapter introduces the hardware and devices that we use in education. When it comes to hardware for educators, it's essential to consider devices that facilitate effective teaching and enhance the learning experience. It's crucial for educators and institutions to assess their specific needs, budget constraints, and technological requirements when selecting hardware for educational purposes.
    • Chapter 5: Technology, Media and Curriculum Integration: This chapter introduces foundational concepts in educational technology, covering technology selection challenges and a brief history of the field. It distinguishes between media and technology, discusses broadcast vs. communicative media, and explores time and space dimensions of media.
    • Chapter 6: Trends and Best Practices in Educational Technology: This chapter addresses the trends shaping virtual environments and explores how online technologies are transforming the landscape of education. The chapter also addresses some  instructional strategies designed for differentiated online learning experiences, helping to adapt content, instruction, and assessment to meet diverse learner needs.
    • Chapter 7: Evaluating Educational Technology: In this chapter, you'll learn about evaluating educational technology and digital media, integrating them into teaching, and securing funding. It emphasizes the importance of determining the technology's impact on learning, considering user-friendliness, and planning for curriculum integration and funding sustainability.
    • Chapter 8: Security Issues and Ethics in Educational Technology: This chapter addresses the rise of technology in schools and the associated risks of computer security issues and ethics, explaining their impact and prevention strategies. It equips educators, administrators, and students with essential knowledge for safeguarding their digital environments and using technology responsibly in educational settings.

    For the Students

Each chapter in this text starts with clearly outlined learning objectives and concludes with a summary, followed by knowledge checks that emphasize key topics. For the most effective learning experience, begin by reviewing the learning objectives, read the content and take notes as needed. At the end of the chapter, complete the knowledge checks and compare your answers to the key. Consider reviewing material for the questions that you may not have answered correctly.

    For the Instructors

Learning objectives can be found at the beginning of each chapter. All chapters are recommended for use in an educational technology or related course. However, for courses using additional textbooks, a review of the learning objectives may help determine which chapters can be omitted. Additionally, chapters contain current links and videos that align with the chapter content as well.  As this topic is ever-changing with the fast moving technology world, the author's intent is to periodically review the content and links to ensure the most recent and relevant information is provided.

It is recommended that the chapters be read in order, however each chapter can stand on its own.  The course was written in a competency-based manner, thus each chapter is focused on a single overarching competency, supported by identified chapter and sub-chapter learning objectives.  At the end of each chapter, there are knowledge checks with answer keys provided to the reader. These are meant as self-check activities where the reader can check their understanding of the chapter content.
