Steering, redlining, and other practices have blocked home ownership many times for individuals based on race, religion, age, and other characteristics. During the civil rights movement in the mid-20th century, we began to see new state and federal legislation such as the FAIR Housing Act and Equal Credit Opportunity Act intended to suppress discrimination and open opportunities.
As a real estate professional, you are responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws to the greatest extent possible and to protect your clients from discrimination or discrimination practices that may involve age, race, religion, family situation or any other discriminatory practice. Allow prospective buyers to select their own neighborhoods, contact local fair housing organizations for compliance information, and make every effort to treat all clients and prospective clients the same. Apply the suggestions for reducing or eliminating bias. Not only is this your responsibility, it is a practice that will build your clients’ trust and respect for you.
