    • Explore the Peralta Equity Rubric

    In the last section, we discussed the importance of Equity in your analysis and decision-making when it comes to educational technology and technology resources.  In this section, we will take some time to explore a tool that you can use in both your instructional and technology-related educational activities by learning about the Peralta Equity Rubric.

    The Peralta Rubric, often referred to as the Peralta Equity Rubric, is a framework for evaluating educational programs, courses, or initiatives, particularly in the context of higher education, with a strong emphasis on equity and social justice. The rubric was developed by the Peralta Community College District in California, and it serves as a comprehensive tool for assessing the quality of instructional materials, pedagogy, and institutional practices in a way that ensures equitable educational experiences for all students. 

    The Peralta Rubric typically includes several key dimensions or categories, each with specific criteria for evaluation. These dimensions may cover a wide range of aspects related to equity in education, including curriculum design, teaching practices, student support services, and institutional policies. While the entire rubric may not apply to educational and intructional technology evaluation, there are parts of it that can be very helpful:

    • Technology: Course structure & activities mitigate digital divide & technology access issues (a) by clarifying how required technologies support learning, and (b) by providing alternative pathways to complete course activities if students face barriers
    • Student Resources and Support: Course highlights the ways that student services support student wellness and success.
    • Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Course content and activities are aligned with core principles of UDL-- i.e., multiple means of representation, action & expression, and/or engagement.
    • Diversity and Inclusion: Communications and activities demonstrate that students’ diverse identities, backgrounds, and cultures are valued.
    • Image and Representation: Images and representations in the course reflect broad diversity; exceptions are explained and discussed.
    • Human Bias: Human biases are identified in course content and activities.
    • Content Meaning: Communications and activities draw connections among course content, students’ lives, and students’ futures.
    • Connection and Belonging:Communications and activities foster care and connection among students, and with the instructor.

    It's important to note that the specific criteria and dimensions of the Peralta Rubric may vary between institutions or contexts. The rubric is a flexible tool that can be adapted to fit the specific needs and goals of the evaluating institution.  Overall, the Peralta Rubric is designed to guide institutions in self-assessment and improvement efforts, helping them identify areas in which they can enhance their commitment to equity and social justice in education, thereby creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.  You can learn more about the process at Peralta Online Equity Rubric.
