    Learning Objectives
    • Identify suppression agents and their uses (foam, CO2, dry chemicals, etc.)
    • Define how suppression agents interact with the fire triangle/tetrahedron.
    • Connect appropriate suppression agents to each class of fire.
    • Compare advantages and limitations of different suppression methods on various classes of fire.
    • Connect the scientific properties of water to its ability to extinguish fire.
    • Discuss limitations of using water as an extinguishing agent.
    • Explain how various extinguishing agents perform on a fire.
    • Explain why various methods of extinguishment are preferred over others.
    • Describe advancements such as clean agents and ultra-high pressure as extinguishing methods.

Extinguishment of fire can be understood utilizing the fire triangle and fire tetrahedron. Removing any side will stop the sustained reaction from continuing. In some instances, reintroducing the removed element will allow the reaction to restart again, so it is important to monitor an extinguished fire to ensure that the reaction does not restart.

    • 7.1: Removing Elements
This page explains four key methods for extinguishing fires: removing heat, fuel, or oxygen, and inhibiting the chemical chain reaction.
    • 7.2: Suppression Agents
This page provides an overview of fire suppression agents, outlining their effectiveness and characteristics.
    • 7.3: Summary
This page reviews fire extinguishment principles and suppression agents.
    • 7.4: Review
This page includes review questions related to fire extinguishment and suppression.
