This book is a remix of four existing texts: Moving Pictures: An Introduction to Cinema, Exploring Movie Construction and Production, Directing, and Documentary Culture. Different authors or teams wrote each, and we combined their work into one resource for a single course. The goal was to bring the strongest parts of each text together so students have one clear path through film studies and production.
The first chapters build a foundation in film language and analysis. Students learn what to look for when they watch a movie and how to talk about it, using tools like mise en scène, narrative, cinematography, editing, sound, and acting. The middle chapters look at genre, directing, and budgeting. They show how creative choices and practical limits work together, and how a film moves from idea to screen.
The final chapters focus on documentary. Students see how nonfiction film has developed over time, from early actualities and scenics to the idea of film truth, the use of documentary as propaganda, and the styles and approaches filmmakers use today. Bill Nichols' six modes and the idea of elastic reality give students a practical way to analyze what they watch and think about what they might make.
Each chapter credits its original authors, and the sources are linked above so readers can find the full original works.
