This book introduces students to film, from how movies are made to how they shape the way we see the world. It starts with the basics of cinema, including a brief history, how to watch a movie critically, and the main tools filmmakers use: mise en scène, narrative, cinematography, editing, sound, and acting. Next, it explains genre and how audiences and studios decide what category a film belongs in. The book then moves behind the camera to look at the director's role and how budgets shape what gets made. The second half focuses on documentary film, tracing its roots in early actualities and scenics, the idea of film truth, and the use of documentary as propaganda. It closes with contemporary documentary and the many styles filmmakers use, including Bill Nichols' six modes and the idea of elastic reality. Together, these chapters help students watch, analyze, and create films with more confidence.
