    Vocabulary Term

    Definition (and Link as applicable)

    Academic Integrity

    Adhering to the college’s code of conduct by composing and submitting one’s own original work assignments.

    Accessible

    Class material is available to be viewed, accessed, or consumed by students with all types of learning abilities and physical abilities.

    APA Style

    Refers to the standard writing and formatting style that adheres to the handbook provided by the American Psychological Association. https://apastyle.apa.org/products/publication-manual-7th-edition

    Application (App)

    Computer software programs developed that enable users to accomplish specific tasks.

    Artificial Intelligence (AI)

    Written work, images, tasks, or products generated by computers or machine automation.

    Basic Needs

    Elements required for everyday life, such as food, shelter, and clothing.

    Browser

    Also known as a web browser, it is an application enabling users to access websites through the Internet.

    Calendar

    Monthly grid showing weeks and days of the month.

    Computer

    Computer: desktop, laptop, tablet, or other device.

    Disabled Student Services

    A college or university office that advocates for students with physical or learning disabilities and ensures their class materials are accessible and their academic needs are accommodated.

    Drop

    Refers to the process of a student dropping (un-enrolling) from a class prior to the census deadline.

    Edit

    To change or modify one’s written work (for example: student assignments).

    F grade

    An earned grade on a transcript that contributes 0 out of 4 points to the overall grade point average.

    Falsification

    Deceptive practice of presenting fraudulent untrue information as if it is truthful.

    FW grade

    Stands for “Failure to Withdraw” from class. An earned grade on a transcript that contributes 0 out of 4 points to the overall grade point average, exactly like an “F” grade.

    Google Docs

    No-cost web-based word processor utilized to create and edit documents, similar to Microsoft® Word®, but with fewer features.

    Grade Point Average (GPA)

    Students’ average grades on a scale up to 4 points per college or university class.

    Internet

    System of globally connected computer networks that allows users to access data from millions of sources.

    Learning & Development Life Cycle

    A series of elements that promote optimum learning and continuous improvement: think, observe, plan, act, and evaluate.

    Learning Management System (LMS)

    Software application designed to host classes for instructors to teach students. Example: Canvas.

    Microsoft® Word®

    Proprietary word processing system provided by Microsoft®. Users can create, edit, share, print, and store documents online. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/word/word-processor

    MLA Style

    Refers to the standard writing and formatting style that adheres to the handbook provided by Modern Language Association. Similar to APA style. https://style.mla.org

    Multi-media

    Presentations available in multiple media formats. Example: a video presentation typically offers three media types: video, audio, and text (with closed captions).

    Off-Campus

    Refers to resources that are available outside of the college or university campus.

    Online educational textbook (OER)

    College course materials that are formatted for free, online access, typically using a platform such as LibreTexts or OpenStax.

    On-Campus

    Refers to resources that are available inside of the college or university campus.

    Plagiarism

    Copying another’s work and presenting it as one’s own work. May be intentional or unintentional. Note that failing to cite the source is also plagiarism.

    Planner

    A paper or digital (online) calendar with daily time slots to provide the user with a method to organize and schedule activities.

    Proofread

    The process of reviewing written work to observe and correct any mechanical or other types of errors.

    Scheduling

    The process of planning or arranging activities and events within a specific timeframe.

    Syllabus

    A course’s schedule of subjects, topics, and assignments covered during the class. Syllabi is plural.

    Time Management

    A process of scheduling and prioritizing tasks in an effective schedule for maximum accomplishment.

    Tutoring

    The process of guiding, advising, coaching, or teaching academic subjects, usually in specialized topics, in addition to the class instructor.

    Wi-Fi

    Wireless technology that provides users Internet access to connect to online sites and apps using radio waves. Wi-Fi connects locally, compared to Internet connections which are accessible worldwide.

    Withdrawal

    The process of removing a student from a class, either by the student or a college instructor/administrator, in which the student’s final grade will reflect a “W” on the transcript.

    Zero textbook cost (ZTC)

    The use of college classroom texts and materials that are free to students.
