It involves upholding high standards of integrity, honesty, and transparency while providing expert guidance and services in property transactions. Professionalism—or lack thereof—can be observed in activities and behavior at work, communication with colleagues, attire, and presentation of oneself.
Standards of professionalism are less formal than a Code of Ethics; they often address implicit (unspoken) culture or business climate. Professional and unprofessional behavior examples are shown below, as understood by typical office employees.
a. Professional
- Communicating with others respectfully.
- When upset with a co-worker or others, approaching the situation calmly.
- Dressing with modesty to avoid offending anyone by one's choice of clothing.
b. Unprofessional
- Yelling or screaming at co-workers or others when upset.
- Cursing and using cuss words or "colorful language."
- Wearing overly casual clothing better suited to a visit to the beach or park.
Conclusion
This module addressed the fundamental concept of ethics in the real estate industry, distinguishing between illegal behaviors and unethical actions. The module explored the REALTOR® Code of Ethics, which sets forth principles and behaviors to guide the conduct of real estate professionals. It presented ethical dilemmas, potential consequences of different courses of action, and methods for resolving them. Additionally, the module addressed professionalism and service standards in the real estate sector, emphasizing the importance of upholding higher ethical standards even when legal requirements may fall short.
By understanding and adhering to these standards, real estate professionals can maintain ethical standards and protect the interests of their clients while upholding the principles of trust and transparency in their dealings.
