    Learning Objectives

    • Recognize appropriate study strategies in particular situations.

The kinds of skills Joe and Alex are developing are part of metacognition. They are each working on the skill of planning strategies for learning particular topics.

    Metacognition
(definition)Metacognition, or “thinking about thinking,” is your awareness of yourself as a learner and your ability to regulate your own learning. It involves five distinct skills:
    1. Assessing the task.

    2. Evaluating your strengths and weaknesses.

    3. Planning an approach.

    4. Applying strategies and monitoring your performance.

    5. Reflecting and adjusting if needed.

The diagram below shows you one example of the metacognitive cycle. Hover over the individual skills to learn more.
