The Self Determination Program is amazing! And many people who want to enter it have an incomplete understanding of the rules about funding. To best support our community, it is vital that independent facilitators understand the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services regulations so they can make recommendations and explain limitations of programs funded with tax-payer money.
This does not mean that a person-centered plan should not include dreams and goals that are not allowed under SDP. It simply means that SDP funds are ONE way to meet the needs, desires, goals, and planning in the life of the person served by the regional center system.
Unlike in the traditional system, cost savings strategies actually help extend budgets, allowing SDP participants to focus their funding allocation on the life-changing supports and services that thinking outside the box with SDP can provide.
A meaningful life filled with choice, control, and autonomy makes complete. Without these basic human rights, people can be marginalized and unfulfilled.
